>> History
The project commenced in November 2001 with the establishment of a voluntary Board of Trustees who formed a Deed of Trust for the Registered Charity. The Board of Trustees is comprised of people from different disciplines, which enables the project to develop with the expertise needed.
The
Minister for Health and Children, Micheal Martin
officially launched the project on the 29th
of April 2002 at Millennium Hall, City Hall,
Cork, and gave the money for the purchase of
the premises.
All other costs had to be raised
through fundraising activity. Renovations commenced
and were finally completed in December 2002.
Great emphasis was placed on creating a holistic
décor and safe environment.
The result is a warm tranquil atmosphere which
is welcoming to all those who visit.
The opening of the house has been a major breakthrough
in the support services for cancer patients
and those who care for them. A diagnosis of
cancer has an enormous psychological impact,
the effect of which can be prolonged. Cork Arc
provides the necessary support when the patient
leaves the hospital setting, and helps them
to adjust to their life after diagnosis.
The Director of Services was appointed in February
2003 and the Director of Development in May 2004. The input of volunteers from the
beginning has been the driving force in the
success of this project. People giving of their
time and expertise sustains the wonderful energy
experienced in the house.
